Penja, a grand cru pepper! The naturally balanced fertile volcanic soils give Penja black pepper its outstanding character and flavour. In 2014, it was the first product from the African continent to gain Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. Penja black pepper will deliciously enhance sauce-type dishes, goat’s cheese or strong meats.

Grown in rich volcanic soil in a microclimate unique to the region. Recognized with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status in the EU and OAPI—the first African product to receive this distinction.

Main Ingredients: 100% Whole Black Peppercorns (Piper nigrum)

Craftsmanship: Black Penja Pepper is harvested by hand while still green and left to dry in the sun until it turns deep black. Traditional fermentation methods and sun-drying preserve the pepper’s essential oils and bold flavor. Cultivated and processed entirely by local farmers using ancestral techniques passed down through generations.

Processed in facilities that may handle sesame, mustard, or nuts.

Texture & Appearance: Dark brown to jet-black peppercorns, Medium to large size with a deeply wrinkled surface, Dry, firm texture with high essential oil concentration.

Flavor Profile: Strong and assertive with rich, earthy undertones. Notes of resin, wood, smoke, and camphor. Offers a bold, lingering heat with aromatic depth and complexity unique to Penja’s volcanic terroir.
